What is SAP?

What is SAP?

SAP is the leading Enterprise Information and Management Package worldwide. Use of this package makes it possible to track and manage, in real-time, sales, production, finance accounting and human resources in an enterprise.

SAP the company was founded in Germany in 1972 by five ex-IBM engineers. In case you’re ever asked, SAP stands for Systeme, Andwendungen, Produkte in der Datenverarbeitung which - translated to English - means Systems, Applications, Products in Data Processing. So now you know! Being incorporated in Germany, the full name of the parent company is SAP AG. It is located in Walldorf, Germany which is close to the beautiful town of Heidelberg. SAP has subsidiaries in over 50 countries around the world from Argentina to Venezuela (and pretty much everything in between). SAP America (with responsibility for North America, South America and Australia - go figure!) is located just outside Philadelphia, PA.

The original five founders have been so successful that they have multiplied many times over such that SAP AG is now the third largest software maker in the world, with over 17,500 customers (including more than half of the world’s 500 top companies). SAP employs over 27,000 people worldwide today, and had revenues of $7.34 billion and Net Income of $581 million in FY01. SAP is listed in Germany (where it is one of the 30 stocks which make up the DAX) and on the NYSE (ticker:SAP).

There are now 44,500 installations of SAP, in 120 countries, with more then 10 million users!

So what made this company so successful? Back in 1979 SAP released SAP R/2 (which runs on mainframes) into the German market. SAP R/2 was the first integrated, enterprise wide package and was an immediate success. For years SAP stayed within the German borders until it had penetrated practically every large German company. Looking for more growth, SAP expanded into the remainder of Europe during the 80’s. Towards the end of the 80’s, client-server architecture became popular and SAP responded with the release of SAP R/3 (in 1992). This turned out to be a killer app for SAP, especially in the North American region into which SAP expanded in 1988.

The success of SAP R/3 in North America has been nothing short of stunning. Within a 5 year period, the North American market went from virtually zero to 44% of total SAP worldwide sales. SAP America alone employs more than 3,000 people and has added the names of many of the Fortune 500 to it’s customer list (8 of the top 10 semiconductor companies, 7 of the top 10 pharmaceutical companies etc). SAP today is available in 46 country-specific versions, incorporating 28 languages including Kanji and other double-byte character languages. SAP also comes in 21 industry-specific versions.

SAP R/3 is delivered to a customer with selected standard process turned on, and many many other optional processes and features turned off. At the heart of SAP R/3 are about 10,000 tables which control the way the processes are executed. Configuration is the process of adjusting the settings of these tables to get SAP to run the way you want it to. Think of a radio with 10,000 dials to tune and you’ll get the picture. Functionality included is truly enterprise wide including: Financial Accounting (e.g. general ledger, accounts receivable etc), Management Accounting (e.g. cost centers, profitability analysis etc), Sales, Distribution, Manufacturing, Production Planning, Purchasing, Human Resources, Payroll etc etc etc. For a full description of the modules included in SAP, see the related articles. All of these modules are tightly integrated which – as you will find out – is a huge blessing … but brings with it special challenges.

SAP are maintaining and increasing their dominance over their competitors through a combination of embracing the internet with mySAP.com (a confusing name we believe) to head off i2 etc extending their solutions with CRM to head off Siebel adding functionality to their industry solutions

What Makes SAP different?

Traditional computer information systems used by many businesses today have been developed to accomplish some specific tasks and provide reports and analysis of events that have already taken place. Examples are accounting general ledger systems. Occasionally, some systems operate in a “real-time” mode that is, have up to date information in them and can be used to actually control events. A typical company has many separate systems to manage different processes like production, sales and accounting. Each of these systems has its own databases and seldom passes information to other systems in a timely manner.

SAP takes a different approach. There is only one information system in an enterprise, SAP. All applications access common data. Real events in the business initiate transactions. Accounting is done automatically by events in sales and production. Sales can see when products can be delivered. Production schedules are driven by sales. The whole system is designed to be real-time and not historical.

SAP structure embodies what are considered the “best business practices”. A company implementing SAP adapts it operations to it to achieve its efficiencies and power.

The process of adapting procedures to the SAP model involves “Business Process Re-engineering” which is a logical analysis of the events and relationships that exist in an enterprise’s operations.

Purpose of SAP:

The sole purpose of an R/3 system is to provide a suite of tightly integrated, large-scale business applications. The standard set of applications delivered with each R/3 system are the following:

  • PP (Production Planning)

  • MM (Materials Management)

  • SD (Sales and Distribution)

  • FI (Financial Accounting)

  • CO (Controlling)

  • AM (Fixed Assets Management)

  • PS (Project System)

  • WF (Workflow)

  • IS (Industry Solutions)

  • HR (Human Resources)

  • PM (Plant Maintenance)

  • QM (Quality Management)

  • CRM (Customer Relationship Management)

These applications are called the functional areas, or application areas, or at times the functional modules of R/3. All of these terms are synonymous with each other.Traditionally, businesses assemble a suite of data processing applications by evaluating individual products and buying these separate products from multiple software vendors. Interfaces are then needed between them. For example, the materials management system will need links to the sales and distribution and to the financial systems, and the workflow system will need a feed from the HR system. A significant amount of IS time and money is spent in the implementation and maintenance of these interfaces.

R/3 comes prepackaged with the core business applications needed by most large corporations. These applications coexist in one homogenous environment. They are designed from the ground up to run using a single database and one (very large) set of tables. Current production database sizes range from 12 gigabytes to near 3 terabytes. Around 8,000 database tables are shipped with the standard delivery R/3 product.

SAP Netweaver

What is SAP NetWeaver?

SAP NetWeaver, the next evolution of mySAP Technology integrates information and business processes across technologies and organizations. What's more, SAP NetWeaver embraces Internet standards such as HTTP, XML, and Web services. Ensuring openness and interoperability with Microsoft .NET and J2EE — IBM WebSphere in particular, SAP NetWeaver is the foundation of SAP xApps and mySAP Business Suite solutions.

SAP NetWeaver – Application Server (WAS)

SAP NetWeaver Application Server (SAP NetWeaver AS) offers customers support for platform-independent Web services, business applications, and standards-based developments based upon key technologies like Java 2 Platform Enterprise Edition (J2EE) and SAP’s ABAP development platform. It also supports multichannel access to enterprise applications with Web-based, voice-controlled, or mobile applications. SAP NetWeaver AS supports security standards for the Internet, including HTTPS, secure sockets layer (SSL), and lightweight directory access protocol (LDAP). This support enables secure communication between all client and server components, authentication and single sign-on, central user management, digital certificates, digital signatures, and auditing.

SAP NetWeaver – Business Intelligence (BI)

SAP Business Intelligence (SAP BI) enables total insight into the enterprise, providing the tools needed to make the right decisions, optimize workflows and measure the success of a strategic approach. It allows you to efficiently collate data from all enterprise sources and analyze it in detail, monitor success-critical factors using external and internal benchmarks, promptly report the most important KPIs to all the relevant contacts in the enterprise and the extended network of affiliates, quickly adapt strategies to changed market conditions and display the results of analyses in a wide variety of formats including grids, graphs and maps.

SAP NetWeaver - NetWeaver Developer (Studio) Infrastructure (NWDI)

The knowledge needed for access to functions, system integration, and process support is stored in a common knowledge database. SAP NetWeaver XI builds upon common technologies, such as Web services, XML messaging, and Java and J2EE standards. SAP NetWeaver XI also provides predefined SAP integration knowledge and gives users collaboration content and implementation knowledge that helps them set up a partner network. The separation of integration knowledge from the underlying application code creates a reliable and scalable IT infrastructure.

SAP NetWeaver – Master Data Management (MDM)

The SAP NetWeaver Master Data Management (SAP NetWeaver MDM) component of SAP NetWeaver creates the preconditions for enterprise services and business process management. The functionality represents customers, products, employees, vendors, and user-defined data objects in unified form. With SAP NetWeaver MDM, customers can manage master data and supplemental content, such as texts, PDF documents, high-resolution images, or diagrams in a central business information warehouse.

SAP NetWeaver – Mobile Infrastructure (MI)

SAP NetWeaver Mobile is a platform-independent runtime environment for mobile solutions that employees can use to access enterprise data at any time and from any location, both online and off. SAP NetWeaver Mobile is based upon open and flexible technology standards like Java, XML, and (Simple Object Access Protocol) SOAP. With a high-performance development environment, users can create integrated mobile solutions that support a system- or browser-based user interface. Data is synchronized between back-end systems and mobile devices. Users can centrally manage and provide mobile solutions from a management console. The solution lets customers make enterprise solutions available to all employees.

SAP NetWeaver – Enterprise Portal (EP)

SAP NetWeaver Portal offers a complete portal infrastructure and high-performance functions for knowledge management and collaboration between enterprises. SAP NetWeaver Portal provides data and applications to employees, partners, and customers according to their tasks and interests in real time and without security risks. Solutions from SAP or other suppliers, legacy systems, databases, unstructured documents, internal and external Web sites, and functions for enterprise-wide collaboration can be quickly and easily linked in SAP NetWeaver Portal. Predefined content promises rapid implementation and lower costs for integration with existing systems. The portal solution is based upon open standards and Web services. It is tightly integrated with other SAP NetWeaver components, so it also supports heterogeneous IT landscapes. Compatibility with Java, J2EE, and Microsoft .NET is ensured.

SAP NetWeaver – Technology

SAP NetWeaver, the next evolution of mySAP Technology integrates information and business processes across technologies and organizations. It brings together structured and unstructured information, harmonizing data formerly trapped in multiple systems — with best-in-class business intelligence, knowledge management, and master data management. What's more, SAP NetWeaver embraces Internet standards such as HTTP, XML, and Web services. Ensuring openness and interoperability with Microsoft .NET and J2EE — IBM WebSphere in particular. And enabling you to benefit from business solutions tailored to meet your needs. Than a comprehensive integration and application platform is SAP NetWeaver the foundation of SAP xApps and mySAP Business Suite solutions. It's also the enabler of an enterprise services architecture that combines the enterprise applications experience of SAP with the flexibility of Web services and open technologies — for complete and services-based business solutions.

ABAP OverView

ABAP Introduction

ABAP is a programming language developed by SAP for programming commercial applications in the SAP environment. Since the introduction of SAP NetWeaver, SAP also offers a programming environment for Java.

ABAP and SAP NetWeaver

In SAP NetWeaver, ABAP is the programming interface of the SAP NetWeaver Application Server ABAP. Prerequisite for the use of the ABAP programming language is the installation of an SAP system based on SAP NetWeaver Application Server ABAP. An SAP system of this type is based on a three-tier client-server architecture with presentation, application, and database layers.

  • The presentation layer is distributed on the workstations of individual users and represents the user interface of the ABAP-based SAP system ( SAP GUI or Web browser).

  • The application layer is realized by one or more application servers. The ABAP runtime environment contains the ABAP runtime environment in which ABAP programs are executed.

  • The database layer consists of a database system in which the central dataset of an ABAP-based SAP system is stored.

The main role of ABAP programs in the application layer is the processing and formatting of data from the database layer and its transfer to, and receipt of user input from the presentation layer.

Scope and application areas of ABAP

ABAP is a 4GL language developed specifically for the mass processing of data in commercial applications. It offers the following advantages in comparison to elementary languages in which these functions are stored in libraries:

  • Database access integrated into the language as Open SQL.

  • Performance optimization of database accesses integrated into the ABAP runtime environment through the use of SAP buffering.

  • Internal tables for dynamic storage and processing of tabular mass data in the working memory.

  • Concept of Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) integrated in the ABAP runtime environment, enabling several users to access the central database at the same time using the SAP LUW.

  • The language has an integrated interface to other programming environments via Remote Function Call.

  • The language has an integrated interface to XML.

The integration of these functions into the language is particularly advantageous for the static checkability and the performance of programs. In return, this means that ABAP also contains considerably more language elements than an elementary programming language.

Programming Model

ABAP supports a procedural object-oriented programming model that is based on subrountines and function modules, and from release 6.10, the programming model is based on classes and interfaces. Both models are interoperable.

Multilingual Capability

ABAP programs can be programmed completely independently of language. This is enabled by the extraction of language-specific program components from the source code, which are then reloaded during program execution according to the environment. A text environment determines the precise program behavior, for example the order in which text is sorted, at runtime. ABAP supports code pages, single-byte code, double byte code and from release 6.10, Unicode. For use in a Unicode system, a program must fulfill certain prerequisites and be identified as a Unicode program.

Mini SAP

What is Mini SAP ?

MINISAP is a full-fledged Basis SAP system without the SAP applications (FI, CO, MM, SD, HR etc.). i.e. MiniSAP contains only the basis core of SAP, without any modules or anything or MiniSAP is a downscaled version of SAP 4.6D. It is used primarily by those learning ABAP. MiniSAP can be installed on a normal, stand-alone PC. MSDE is used as database server, and is installed by the MiniSAP installation program. It has every Basis function of a standard SAP-R/3 system (ABAP/4 Development Workbench, Data Transfer Workbench, Computer Center Management System - CCMS, etc.) and, therefore, is a very good means to get exposed and trained in ABAP/4 programming language.

Another Definition of MiniSAP:

The Mini SAP Web Application Server 6.10 is a full SAP basis system, but without application areas suchas HR, SD, MM etc. Because it does have standard SAP development tools such as the developmentworkbench(SE80) you are able to develop and test new custom functionality including reports, transactions,Business Server Pages and ABAP Objects on your home PC. It has Full ABAP Stack functionality of mySAPTechnology SAP Server, GUI and SAPDB database.

You can try installing Mini SAP on your PC/Laptop to learn SAP ABAP. Here are the minimum requirements for Mini SAP Installation:

The hardware and software requrements are:-
- Windows 2000 oder Windows NT 4.0, Service Pack 4 or higher
- Internet Explorer 4.01 or higher
- At least 128 MB RAM
- At least 256 MB paging file
- At least 2.2 GB disk space (60 MB DB software, 1.9 GB SAP data, 100 MB SAP Gui + temporary free space for the installation)
- The file C:\Winnt\system32\drivers\etc\services must not contain an entry for port 3600 (a possible entry can be excluded by using the symbol '#').
- Network (TCP/IP - Protocol) must be available

To install and use the system, you must be logged on to your PC as an administrator. The whole installation takes half an hour to an hour, depending on system performance.

Preliminary Remark
The Mini SAP Basis System is delivered on two CDs. The KERNEL CD contains the files for the Kernel and the Frontend (SAPGUI). The DATA CD contains the compressed contents of the SAP database.
You install the components of the SAP System in two steps. First you install the application server and the database system including the database data. Then you install the Frontend (SAPGUI). You only need to install the SAPGUI if you do not have a 4.6D SAPGUI on your PC.

The installation is, for the most part, self-explanatory. When you insert the KERNEL CD into the CD drive, an HTML file is automatically opened that displays a summary of this installation guide and references to additional information. If this does not happen, open the file :\mini.htm in the root directory on the CD.

Installing Microsoft SQL Server 2000 During the installation of Mini SAP Basis System a runtime version of SQL Server will be installed.

SAP IDES , ECC

What is SAP IDES and System Requirement for installations?

What is SAP IDES (Internet Demonstration and Evaluation System)?

SAP IDES is a normal R/3 but with lots of DEMO data. The system that contains several sample companies typifying relevant business processes. It is simple to use and has a variety of master and transaction data, and is used for demos, online/classroom training, and presentations. Potential customers use IDES to trial and test software via Internet.

SAP IDES – the "Internet Demonstration and Evaluation System" in the R/3 System, represents a model company. It consists of an international group with subsidiaries in several countries. IDES contains application data for various business scenarios that can be run in the SAP System. The business processes in the IDES system are designed to reflect real-life business requirements, and have access to many realistic characteristics. IDES uses easy-to-follow business scenarios to show you the comprehensive functions of the R/3 System. The focal point of IDES, however, is not the functionality itself, but the business processes and their integration.

IDES not only covers the Logistics area, but also Financials, and Human Resources. It demonstrates how the R/3 System is able to support practically all types of industries, from discrete production through to process industries, from engineering-to-order to repetitive manufacturing. However, IDES is not a sector-oriented model company. The individual processes are based on practice-oriented data for sectors such as Retailing or Banking. The IDES group manufactures products as diverse as elevators, motorcycles, and paints.

IDES is managed by SAP just as any regular business enterprise. SAP regularly updates the IDES data (master data, transaction data, and customizing). IDES also carry out period-end closing and plan with different time-horizons. Transaction data are generated to ensure that the information systems in all areas have access to realistic evaluation data. IDES are constantly implementing new, interesting business scenarios to highlight the very latest functions available in the R/3 System. New functions are represented and documented by IDES scenarios.

Above all, IDES shows you the possibilities of the integrated applications in the SAP System. IDES cover all aspects of a business enterprise, including Human Resources, Financial Accounting, Product Cost Planning, Overhead Management, Profitability Analysis, Planning, Sales and Distribution, Materials Management, Production, and much, much more. IDES have also integrated document administration and third-party CAD systems within the IDES system. This means that you can call up and display external documents, or access CAD drawings.

IDES shows you how the R/3 System supports production processes, the supply chain, and the efficient usage of global resources. Or perhaps you would like to increase your understanding of just-in-time-production or the integration of the electronic KANBAN system in an MRP II environment? IDES provides the ideal way to learn about areas such as Product Cost Controlling, Activity-Based Costing, or integrated Service Management and Plant Maintenance. How to manage high inflation is just one of the ever-growing number of IDES business scenarios that you can choose from.

What is ECC?

ECC stands for ERP Central Component. R/3 Enterprise was replaced with the introduction of ERP Central Component (SAP ECC). The SAP Business Warehouse, SAP Strategic Enterprise Management and Internet Transaction Server were also merged into SAP ECC, allowing users to run them under one instance. Architectural changes were also made to support an enterprise services architecture to transition customers to a services-oriented architecture.

System Requirement to install IDES:

For installing IDES 4.6C or 4.7 on a Laptop, you need at least :-

Pentium 3/Pentium 4 with any CPU
2*40 GB HDD
1GB RAM
DVD Drive
